Laparoscopic surgery has aroused interest among the general public because of its perceived benefits - reduced hospital stay, quicker recovery time and less post-operative pain.
On the other hand, laparoscopic surgery has not so far been universally accepted amongst the surgical community and one of the main reasons lies in the difficulty in learning these techniques along with a perception of an increased risk of complications in more difficult surgical cases.
Thus, there is a void between the few surgeons who have adopted the new techniques with enthusiasm and the large number who continue to carry out procedures with a “classic” laparotomy. Many of the surgeons who continue to use open techniques would prefer to perform certain operations laparoscopically but a lack of systematic and focused training prevents them from doing so.
Following many years of participating in, and organizing, training courses and workshops, here and abroad, ACET has been created to address this issue. It is focusing its attention on bringing laparoscopic techniques to a wider audience and with it a better appreciation of the safe application of such procedures to their everyday work.
